Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that is not curable but very controllable. Current asthma treatment varies depending upon the severity of the condition and the living conditions of the sufferer. For instance if the asthmatic is allergic to dust mites but the carpet and draperies can’t be removed then controlling drugs must be stronger than if all preventative measures can be taken.

Current asthma treatment of mild persistent asthma has had the most flexibility in the treatment options open to the asthma sufferer. In two new studies the researchers found that sufferers may benefit from inhaled corticosteroids and a bronchodilator twice daily as opposed to steroids taken in pill form.

When corticosteroids are taken in pill form the medication becomes systemic, or rather it affects the whole body, as opposed to just the lungs when administered by an inhaler. Although some of the steroids are metabolized systemically when it is taken by an inhaler the amount is significantly less and many people show little to none of the steroid side effects.

Current asthma treatment includes inhaled corticosteroids as the mainstay of anti-inflammatory therapy. This is good news for asthmatics since long term use of corticosteroids has been linked with other severe side effects. Patients who have been taking corticosteroids for long term have a higher risk of obstructive sleep apnea, kidney and liver disorders, and decreased ability to fight infection.

Sufferers with mild persistent asthma can back their medications down to the least needed to support their body without rescue medications daily while using daily inhaled corticosteroids that have minimal systemic affects. In one study released from the American Lung Association 500 people who used the inhaled treatment regimen had a 20% failure rate (needed urgent medical attention) vs. medications such as Singulair, which had a 30% failure rate.

Another current asthma treatment is the use of anti-leukotrienes. Leukotrienes are substances in the body that have been shown to be prominent in many inflammatory conditions. They cause bronchocontriction. Anti-leukotrienes have shown to have a positive effect on control of asthma once the current episode has subsided and the sufferer is no longer using corticosteroids. Studies show that using anti-leukotrienes with corticosteroids does not decrease the time used of the steroids.

Many people with asthma will try to down play their symptoms and they often become very tolerant of the limited physical activity they experience. Doctors will often use history as well as peak flow values to assess the effect of the current asthma treatment. Questions they may ask include:

*How often do you use a rescue inhaler?
*How often do you awaken at night coughing?
*Are your physical activities limited because of breathing issues?
*How much have you been out of work/school with chest problems?
*How many times admitted into the hospital in the past 12 months?
*How many times you have taken oral steroids?
*What are the peak flow values – do you graph them?

Asthma sufferers who require a rescue inhaler for actual problems, and not as a preventative prior to exercise, more than 3 times per week can probably be managed better.

Asthma sufferers are not always compliant with the medication regimens of current asthma treatments (including parents for their children) because they don’t fully understand the medications, uses and side effects nor appreciate the side effects of even mild asthma left untreated. It is essential that the sufferer address their concerns with their doctor or nurse practitioner so they are fully aware of the need for regular medication, that it isn’t habit forming and that without the medication the sufferer can experience dire consequences.

Current treatments for asthma includes medication, a written asthma management plan, preventative measures and education so that the asthma sufferer and their family are fully aware of the asthma signs and symptoms and are able to react appropriately.

Many people with asthma find that their condition is greatly aggravated by certain allergens. Among the most common culprits is pollen, which is produced by certain plants in order to reproduce themselves. Pollen is a major concern to people with hay fever, but it also leads to a condition known as allergy induced asthma. These tiny particles are abundant in certain seasons of the year, and are easily distributed through a variety of means including water, wind and animals. Avoiding these allergens can be difficult, but you’ll experience fewer asthma attacks if you do.

If you’re allergic to pollen, you’ll be sure to experience allergy induced asthma symptoms at certain times of the year, which is typically the growing season of plants. Here’s an interesting note about asthma attacks that are brought about by pollen. They frequently occur early in the day, because that’s when plants tend to release their pollen. So that’s a good time to stay indoors, with the doors and windows shut and the air purifier running.

Another frequent trigger of allergy induced asthma are fungi. These plants are actually scavengers that feed off dying organisms. They serve a useful purpose in nature because they help to break up decaying plant life and transform it into valuable nutrients for the soil. Fungi have other important uses as well. They are critical to the production of certain antibiotics such as penicillin, and you could never enjoy a glass of wine or a fine cheese if they didn’t exist. But for those who are allergic to these tiny organisms, their effects can be very severe. And if you also have an asthma condition, the problem is multiplied. The spores that are released during the manufacture of cheese, wine and other alcohols can contribute to a serious allergy induced asthma attack.

Allergy induced asthma can also be the result of dust in your home. Dust is common allergen that can lead to allergy symptoms as well as an asthma attack. It’s hard to deal with the dust in your home, because you can’t see most of it. And it isn’t just dust you might have to contend with. Pet hair and dander, microscopic insect residue and even food particles can cause problems. However, by vacuuming frequently and wiping down the surfaces of your furniture, you can make a significant impact on the problem. Launder your bedding regularly as well.

Allergy induced asthma can be a serious problem. If you find that you’re experiencing more frequent and severe attacks under certain conditions, you need to discuss this with your doctor. He might recommend that you be tested for allergies, so that you can learn what it is you need to avoid in order to keep your allergies and asthma at bay.

The American Thoracic Society in 2004 reported that 15-23% of new asthma cases in adults were work related. Those who work in various manufacturing and service industries have more of a tendency to develop occupational asthma. It is triggered in any line of work: hospitals, stores, offices, or medical facilities, as long as there are products that can catalyze occupational asthma through inhalation.

This type of respiratory disease is most prevalent in the following industries and jobs: plastic, chemical, rubber, textile, and electronics industry; printing, painting, dyeing, welding, metalworking, cleaning, oil refining, farming, baking and food processing, gardening, landscaping, horticulture, any jobs associated with animals, and laboratory work. Some professions are less affected such as technical, sales and administrative support jobs.

Things that trigger asthma include animal proteins, flour, reactive chemicals, natural rubber latex, and enzymes. Other triggers may include anything such as smoke, chemicals, vapors and gases, animal dander, pollen, fumes, dust, or other airborne particles, allergens, variations of extreme temperatures or humidity, any type of stress. When catalysts are recognized simple mitigation can reduce the risk of the disease.

Another type of causal agent is called a colophony fume, which is most commonly noted within the electronics industry. It arises from pine resin and it contains abietic acid along with other resin acids that are used as fluxes in soldering. Any airborne exposure to respiratory agents carries a degree of risk for triggering asthma.

There are two types of occupational asthma attacks that may occur: aggravation of preexisting asthma or irritant asthma. The most common type is the aggravation of preexisting asthma; a person becomes hypersensitive to the trigger if exposed regularly over time. Irritant asthma is when a person is exposed to a certain type of substance or condition in their work place that irritates the airways. This type of asthma is not developed over a duration or period of time, though it develops through high exposure or concentration of irritants.

The symptoms are abrupt and immediate, and irritation may result in allergy like or asthma like symptoms. The symptoms differ from standard asthma, and are often referred to as Reactive Airways Dysfunction Syndrome. Once an attack begins, the airways will begin to swell and tighten, making it difficult to breathe (bronchospasm).

All reasonable measures should be implemented in containment of potential triggers and proper ventilation. Speaking with a health care provider can give you more information on the disease. Be sure to follow the treatment recommendations of your doctor, and report any difficulties or problems with the medication.

There are times when a patient may experience a typical asthma attack accompanied by wheezing and difficulty in breathing, but the normal treatment methods do not appear to work. In some of these cases, the symptoms may be exacerbated beyond their medication’s capabilities and acute asthma treatment will be necessary. When an asthma sufferer experiences symptoms to the point they can no longer breathe, they will need emergency care and possibly will require hospitalization to determine the cause of the extended attack as well as to determine if additional problems have developed in order to treat the asthma.

Chest x-rays and electrocardiograms are often administered during acute asthma treatment to check the patient’s lungs and their heart to learn if any additional damage has been done. Beta-2 agonists are the most common drugs administered in the early stages of acute asthma treatment even before the emergency room staff has determined what sparked the sudden attack. These drugs have been developed to help clear mucus from the bronchial tubes and typically work faster to restore breathing.

The patient will also be administered a exhalation test to determine the capacity of their lungs and how well they can breathe out. This test can help emergency responders determine the best acute asthma treatment for the individual patient. Most patients can relieve sudden attacks on their own, but those who do not respond well to corticosteroid medications may require acute asthma treatment more often.

There are many known triggers to asthma attacks and when seeking acute asthma treatment by a medical professional it will help them determine the best route to treat the sudden exacerbation of the symptoms. Additionally, the patient’s history in responding to certain asthma medications will also help the emergency responder administer the appropriate treatment in the important first few minutes.

Those who suffer an attack due to some of the environmental causes may need to seek specific allergic asthma treatment to eliminate the symptoms of not only the asthma attack but also from the allergic reaction. For many patients who suffer allergies from pollen, pet dander and other airborne causes, acute asthma treatment may include complete removal of the hazards that caused their attack.

Patients and those around them have to remember that a need for acute asthma treatment can be a life-saving decision and in many cases will be a matter of life and death. These treatments for asthma will need to begin as soon as it is apparent that the typical home care solutions are not working.

Asthma is a very common condition, a disease that affects millions of people around the world. It can range from being so mild that it is hardly noticeable and hardly ever a problem to being so severe that it is basically debilitating.

Asthma is a chronic disease that affects your airways, which are the tubes that carry the air in and out of your lungs. Obviously this can get to be quite serious, which is why if you do have asthma you need to make sure that you take proper care of yourself and always keep in touch with your doctor to treat the asthma.

If you are one of the millions of asthma sufferers around the world, you may be wondering what the asthma attack cause is, and why you have asthma attacks. There is actually no single asthma attack cause, but rather a number of different factors, any of which may be triggering your asthma attacks and therefore be considered as your asthma attack cause.

Possible Causes

If you are trying to find out what the asthma attack cause is in your case, what it is that is triggering your asthma attack symptoms, here are a few of the most likely possibilities.

Allergens are often causes of asthma and asthma attacks, and this includes animal dander, dust mites, cockroaches, pollen, and mold. There are also many irritants that are asthma triggers, including cigarette smoke, indoor and outdoor air pollution, cold air and weather changes, strong odors, scented products, and stress.

There are also a number of other asthma triggers which you may find are the asthma attack cause in your case. This could be anything from particular medications that you are taking to certain infections or even gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Because there are so many different possibilities, it is important that you seek medical attention. Talk to your doctor about your condition, have them do a proper assessment. Whether or not they find out the actual causes and triggers in your case, they will still be able to give you a broader idea on your condition and offer you tips on how to manage it.

Keep in mind that there are also many asthma attack cause ideas which are only myths, so do not believe everything that you hear. Far too often pregnant women hear that almost anything they do is going to cause their child to have asthma, but many of these are not true so do not get paranoid because stressing yourself out will only be worse for the baby.

When it concerns allergies and asthma, there are often cases when ordinary treatment methods will not prove to be effective and more exhaustive treatment is required. This can mean that the patient needs to be treated at an allergy asthma center where more specialized care can be given. In fact, taking the patient to an allergy asthma center can also help in getting a more detailed and accurate diagnosis of the condition done, and only after the causes have been identified, can the allergy asthma center then recommend suitable treatment for asthma relief.

In fact, allergy asthma center usually only does diagnosis and treatment of the patient’s condition and of course, the one that you visit must do so in as effective a manner as possible. Thus, the staff should have long years of experience behind them and an allergist should at least have considerable training in treating asthmatics.

Getting Over The Condition

That being said, there are many asthmatics who often arrive at the wrong conclusion in that they feel that simply taking asthmatic medications can cure their problems, and in fact, believing that one can get over the allergies in this way is being way off track, because it in fact, requires ascertaining the causes as well as symptoms before using different means to treat the condition.

By visiting allergy asthma center you will have a better chance of having causes as well as symptoms treated and this is where the expertise of the staff comes into play, because only a qualified allergist would be able to identify and treat different causes and symptoms.

You also need to ensure that the allergy asthma center that you choose will dedicate them to providing the best in quality health care, especially in the fields of asthma and allergies and to also be good at the alleviation as well as control of your symptoms. In fact, when you first visit the allergy asthma center, you will be asked to document what is ailing you after which the staff will investigate the symptoms and causes and then suggest a course of action.

Asthma allergies are also something that most patients dread because the condition can severely affect their well being and balance and the reasons for such a condition are many and they each need to be treated at the earliest. In fact, some allergens such as plant pollutants and fungi can bring on an attack which must be dealt with at the earliest, and so visiting an allergy asthma center makes sense as you will be assured of proper identification of causes and appropriate treatment thereafter.

Often, just the initial prognosis is enough to provide temporary relief and the patient may even start to show considerable improvement after following initial recommendations. To be sure, the staff at an allergies and asthma center understands how much misery is piled on the patient because of their allergy asthma condition and thus they are best equipped to recommend treatments to symptoms such as cure nasal congestion, sneezing, wheezing, coughing, watery nasal discharge as well as breathlessness and even watery and itchy eyes, as too post nasal discharge.

Asthma is a terrible disease, one that is hard enough to live with if you are an adult, but if you are a child it is especially traumatic. Childhood asthma can be so severe that it is practically debilitating, and can really take one’s childhood away from them. If your child has childhood asthma, also known as pediatric asthma, it is important that you make yourself as educated as you can on the disease and also that you watch and make sure that their symptoms do not worsen. If their symptoms ever do worsen and they start to have an asthma attack, they are going to need medical attention right away to treat the asthma. Symptoms would include anything from tightness in the chest and wheezing to coughing and shortness of breath. Keep in mind that these are not the only childhood asthma symptoms and that the asthma symptoms in children will vary from one to another.

Of course one of the most important issues on the subject of childhood asthma is management. There is no cure for the disease as of yet, but there are many effective treatments and remedies that you can use to keep the symptoms under control and help avoid the onset of attacks.

pWhen you are treating asthma in a child it will be much different than it would be in an adult. This is because children are much more susceptible to the effects of asthma, and also because their bodies are smaller and so therefore they are not able to use some of the treatments and remedies that are available to adults.

Combination therapy is the best option when it comes to keeping childhood asthma under control. This means using an inhaler that contains two or more medications rather than just one. Using inhaled corticosteroids only when needed may improve compliance which is likely to occur in patients with mild asthma who have infrequent symptoms.

Taking just one medication or another may help but for childhood asthma you want to avoid asthma attacks even more than you would in adults and so therefore using a combination of medications in the inhaler is going to be your best bet.

If your child has asthma, take every step that you can to become more informed and aware, and that you take every precaution possible to ensure that your child’s pediatric asthma stays under as best control as possible. Work as a team with your doctor to make sure that this happens.

Asthma is a chronic condition that is treatable and controllable but definitely not curable. Sufferers often describe the feeling as a metal band squeezing their chest. The traditional model of managing patient care doesn’t work for complicated chronic problems like asthma. A more creative way of management is to provide a disease manager or asthma coach who helps a roster of children with asthma through their treatment plans.

Millions of American children suffer from asthma and only within the past 10 years have physicians found adequate ways of controlling this condition. Unfortunately both children and adults today don’t always get the right treatment because many people don’t realize that asthma requires two types of medication to adequately control the condition.

Think of the lungs as being too irritable and when they are exposed to a trigger such as pet dander or smoke the muscle fibers around the bronchioles constrict causing the wheezing sound that is so indicative of asthma. Rescue drugs are used to control the constriction and make the muscles relax.

The bronchioles or tiny airways can also become swollen when triggered from other types of substances. Rescue drugs don’t fix this type of problem. Instead controllers like inhaled steroids or other anti-inflammatory drugs are used to decrease the inflammation and improve the oxygen exchange.

Studies show that patients do not always receive the correct medication or the correct types of medication. In a 2000 study published in Pediatrics researchers found that only one in four children with asthma received controller medications. And in a study published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine researchers reported that only half of the doctors gave their patients written asthma plans and only 40% prescribed controllers.

Even when children are prescribed controllers, according to a 2002 Pediatrics paper, only half received them because the parents weren’t giving them. Some parents are fearful that the medications are habit forming or addictive, while others fear the children will become used to the medication and it won’t work anymore.

One of the ways that asthma sufferers are able to learn to manage their illness is to use an asthma management plan. The written management plan should include all known triggers of the asthma, the normal peak flow values, normal end expiratory volume values, controlling and rescue medications, activity limitations, emergency phone numbers and the signatures of the sufferer and the parent if that is appropriate.

Another option for management is an asthma coach, offered by a growing number of health plans. An asthma coach is often employed by insurance companies and health plans to help decrease their costs for unplanned emergency room and urgent care visits.

The asthma coach regularly reviews a patient’s history to ensure the right medications are prescribed and being given. They coordinate with the doctor to arrange follow up visits and contact the families to assure that the treatment is progressing.

The use of an asthma coach has been shown to decrease costs to the insurance company and to the patient. Patients have a decreased number of emergency room visits and office visits to treat asthma attacks. An ounce of prevention is truly worth the pound of cure. Asthmatics who avoid their triggers will often find they use less rescue medications and are under better control. And an asthma coach can help provide all of that.

Asthma is a chronic lung condition with ongoing airway inflammation that results in recurring episodes of swelling and blocking of the airways. Exposures to triggers creates this swelling and blockage which can be mild, moderate, severe or fatal. Asthma types determines the treatment that is prescribed.

Treatment of asthma today can improve the ability of students to participate fully in activities even though often times student asthma can be precipitated by exercise. Asthma is classified in a variety of ways and often is described by the trigger that makes the asthma worse or when the asthma is diagnosed. Your asthma type will also determine your treatment options.

The most common asthma type is child–onset asthma which begins in childhood and often happens in a child who likely has a genetic predisposition and has been sensitized to common allergens. When children who have this predisposition (atopic children) are exposed to those potential allergens such as house dust, mites, animal proteins, fungus or other toxins they produce a type of antibody. More exposure to the allergens can lead to an asthmatic response. Interestingly, atopic children are also more prone to eczema that is linked to asthma.

Adult onset asthma develops after age 20 and is less common than asthma in children. It affects more women than men and can be triggered by allergies but allergic response doesn’t seem to be the most important factor. Other triggers include animal products, forms of plastic, wood dust or metals.

Exercised induced asthma happens during or after strenuous exercise. This type of response is recognized in up to 80% of people with asthma but it also may be an isolated event. Exercised induced asthma can happen once without other symptoms of asthma ever occurring again. The event happens 5-20 minutes after beginning exercise that involves breathing through the mouth.

Because cold weather is a primary trigger for asthma it makes sense that sport games played in the cold weather, such as hockey, running, and cross-country skiing are also likely to trigger an attack.

Cough variant asthma happens with coughing alone or with wheezing. The coughing variant asthma type can confuse the diagnosis of asthma and be confused with bronchitis and post nasal drip due to hay fever or sinus disease.

Occupational asthma happens in response to a trigger from the workplace such as contaminants in the air and allergens; although the substances can be encountered in most workplaces it is more common in workers in manufacturing industries.

Nocturnal asthma attacks happen between midnight and 8 am. Triggered by allergens in the home the sufferer may not recognize the asthma until they are awakened at night by wheezing and shortness of breath. There may or may not be a relationship between nocturnal and daytime asthma.

There are several asthma types that can be diagnosed and happen concurrently in people. The child-onset asthmatic may also have cough variant or exercise induced asthma. Don’t diagnose yourself from personal reading. Instead, get a diagnosis and treatment plan from your physician.

Many people these days are looking for a natural way to manage their asthmatic condition. One of the popular options in this regard is the use of yoga for asthma treatment. There is intriguing evidence to suggest that yoga breathing exercises could help sufferers of mild asthma and may help reduce their use of low-dose drug inhalers in wheezing attacks.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that yoga can be remarkably effective at managing an asthmatic condition. The results indicate that attacks can be averted simply through participating in yoga on a regular basis, thereby reducing the dependence on drugs.

Part of the reason for this is the fact that yoga relaxes your mind and body, allowing your immune system to function more effectively. But the real key seems to be that yoga breathing techniques help regulate breathing patterns and improve lung functioning.

Researchers from the Respiratory Medicine Unit, City University, Nottingham, are calling for more studies of alternative methods of improving breathing control, which they say have been largely ignored by Western medicine. While yoga practitioners have long believed in the benefits of pranayama breathing exercises for asthmatics, this has been hard to study formally. But using a Pink City lung, a device that imposes slow breathing on the user and can mimic pranayama breathing exercises, it was possible for researchers to measure the effects of controlled breathing in a clinical trial.

Two simulated pranayama exercises were tested: slow deep breathing and breathing out for twice as long as breathing in. The researchers used standard clinical tests to measure the volume of air patients were able to blow out in a second and to test the irritability of their airways. After yoga, their airways were two times less irritable.

Regularly practicing yoga postures and pranayama improves lung capacity and airflow. Breathing exercises help you maintain relaxed and controlled breathing, which is essential for preventing or reducing asthma attacks. Back bending postures help to open up the chest, thereby enhancing the functionality of the lungs. Concentrate on upper back bends and chest opening postures if you find it difficult to exhale during an asthma attack. Practice forward bends and lower back bending poses if you have more problems with inhaling. Inverted postures are terrific for draining accumulations of mucus from the lungs.

Though asthma patients should not stop their medication, they should consider experimenting with yogic breathing exercises to help manage their condition. This video shows you a simple but effective technique for yogic breathing aimed at controlling asthma.
